Looking for a ghostly adventure or just love California history? Take a detour and check out Chinese Camp, one of several ghost towns in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

During its hay day, Chinese Camp was home to nearly 5,000 Chinese laborers. Take a quick walk down the town's Main Street and it's easy to picture a bustling town. Many of original buildings, though dilapidated, are still standing, including the corner saloon, hotel, and store front. At one point the town included a post office and bank.

Cross the highway to visit Saint Francis Xavier Church, one of the oldest churches in the county. The church yard includes headstones dating back to the 1800's and is still in use today.

Before heading home, pop into the Chinese Camp Corner Store and Tavern to chat with locals about the history and lore of the old town.

Ghosts or no, this town is a wonderful time capsule of the California Gold Rush era.
